American Heart Association – 2018 Vascular Disease Strategically Focused Research Network

Purpose: The American Heart Association’s Strategically Focused Research Network (SFRN) is designed to enhance the understanding of the causes, biology, pathophysiology and epidemiology of peripheral artery disease (PAD) and/or aortic disease and to develop more effective ways to prevent and treat them with ultimate improvement in outcomes. A Strategically Focused Research Network is comprised of three to four institutions, or Centers, working on three projects each that are focused on one strategic area. A Center application can comprise projects from more than one institution.

Funding Amount:  Up to $3.7 million over 4 years

Institutional Limit:  1

No Internal Competition: The University of Kentucky has designated a qualified applicant team from the Saha Cardiovascular Research Center to submit an application to this program. This team has the requisite narrowly focused expertise on PAD and aortic disease in place. Thus, there will be no internal competition.

American Honda Foundation – Grants Program

Purpose: The American Honda Foundation supports youth education with a specific focus on the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects in addition to the environment.Funding priorities are: Youth education, specifically in the areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, the environment, job training and literacy.

Funding Amount/ Project Period: $20,000- $75,000 for one year

Institutional Limit: 1   Organizations may only submit one request in a 12-month period.

APF Koppitz

American Psychological Foundation – Elizabeth Munsterberg Koppitz Child Psychology Graduate Student Fellowship

Purpose: The Elizabeth Munsterberg Koppitz Child Psychology Graduate Student Fellowship supports graduate research projects and scholarships in child psychology in order to nurture excellent young scholars for careers in areas of psychology, such as child-clinical, pediatric, school, educational and developmental psychopathology, and support scholarly work contributing to the advancement of knowledge in these areas. Candidates must have completed doctoral candidacy at the time of application and provide documentation.

Funding Amount/ Project Period: $25,000 for one year

Blavatnik Family Foundation - Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists

Purpose: The Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists recognize the country’s most promising faculty-rank scientists and engineers in the disciplinary categories of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering, and Chemistry.

Eligibility Requirements:

A nominee must:

  • Have been born in or after 1976,
  • Hold a doctoral degree,
  • Currently hold a faculty position at an invited institution in the United States

Funding Amount: $250,000

Institutional Limit:  3 - one in each of the three categories (Life Sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering, and Chemistry). 

Note: The nominator must be the institution’s President, Provost, or their official designee.

Brain SIA

Brain Research Foundation - Scientific Innovations Award (SIA)

Purpose: The Brain Research Foundation’s 2018 Scientific Innovations Award (SIA) supports innovative science in both basic and clinical neuroscience. This funding mechanism is designed to support creative, exploratory, cutting edge research in well-established research laboratories, under the direction of established investigators. SIA is for projects that may be too innovative and speculative for traditional funding sources but still have a high likelihood of producing important findings in a very short timeframe. The foundation has invited the University of Kentucky to nominate one senior faculty member to submit a Letter of Intent for this program.

Eligibility: The nominated candidate must be a full-time professor or associate professor, in the area of studies of brain function in health and disease. See funding opportunity announcement for full eligibility guidelines.

Funding Amount/ Project Period: $150,000 (direct costs) over two years

francis fellowship

Francis Family Foundation, The Parker B. Francis Fellowship Program

Purpose: The Parker B. Francis Fellowship in Pulmonary Research provides research support to clinical and basic scientists embarking on careers in clinical, laboratory or translational science related to Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at a U.S. or Canadian university or research institution. The ideal candidate is one with evidence of strong aptitude in research and who is in transition from post-doctoral trainee to independent investigator.

Eligibility: Scientists holding a relevant doctoral degree (e.g., M.D., Ph.D., Sc.D., D.V.M., Dr. P.H.) who are embarking on a career in clinical, laboratory or translational science related to Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at a U.S. or Canadian university or research institution.  See the full guidelines for more eligibility information.

Funding Amount/Funding Period:  $156,000 over three years

Institutional Limit: 2 applications per department.

greenwall faculty

Greenwall Foundation – Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program

Purpose: The Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics is a career development award to enable junior faculty members to carry out innovative bioethics research. The program supports research that goes beyond current work in bioethics to help resolve pressing ethical issues in clinical care, biomedical research, and public policy.

Funding Amount: 50 percent salary support for three years and $5,000 per year for project support

Eligibility: Applicants must be junior faculty members holding at least a 60% appointment in a tenure series. Priority will be given to applicants who have not yet been considered for tenure.
