Dr. Butterfield is the UK Alumni Association Endowed Professor of Biological Chemistry, director of the Redox Metabolism Core of the Markey Cancer Center, and faculty in both the Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging. His research focuses on free radical oxidative stress in aging and age-related neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Butterfield has worked with the VPR in development of research workshops for career development.

 Within the Office of the Vice President for Research, Dr. Butterfield:

  • Facilitates operations of Research Centers and Institutes
  • Establishes processes for center/institute development and support
