2017 Igniting Research Collaborations (IRC) Symposium

The Igniting Research Collaborations (IRC) program fosters cross-college research collaborations through pilot funding. Faculty from all UK colleges are eligible to apply for IRC pilot funding. For more information, see the program page

The Igniting Research Collaborations (IRC) Symposium is will offer campus investigators the opportunity to hear about the impact of this pilot funding program directly from the cross-college collaborative research teams who were funded in 2017. 

12:30 pm – 1:10 pm: Refreshments (Coffee & Cookies)

1:10 pm – 1:15 pm: Welcome and Introduction (Linda Dwoskin, ADR College of Pharmacy)

1:15 pm – 1:30 pm: Sridhar Sunderam (Biomed Engineering), Matthew Gentry (Molecular & Cellular Biochemistry), James Pauly (Pharmaceutical Sciences). “Investigation of the antiepileptic potential of docosahexaenoic acid in a knockout mouse of Lafora disease.”

1:30 pm – 1:45 pm: David Williams (UK-RCARS), Joe Chappell (Pharmaceutical Sciences), Jim Pauly (Pharmaceutical Sciences). “Qualifying industrial hemp CBD oils for studies on brain development.”

1:45 pm – 2:00 pm: William Ford (Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering), Andrea Erhardt (Earth & Enviro Sci). “Biogeochemical characterization of backwater wetlands for improving water quality in disturbed Appalachian watersheds on the Ohio river.”

2:00 pm – 2:15 pm: Jill Kolesar (PPS), Kate Zaytseva (Tox & Cancer Bio), Chi Wang (Biostatistics). “Identification of novel therapeutics strategies for colorectal cancer based on genomic profiling.”

2:15 pm – 2:30 pm: Samuel Awuah (Chemistry), Bradley Berron (Chemical Engineering). “Gold-based ligand discovery for c-Myc inhibition using microarrays.”

2:30 pm – 2:45 pm Adam Bachstetter (SCoCIRC/Neurosci), Jessica Santollo (Biology), Amanda Glueck (Sports Med Res Inst), Dong Han (Neurology). “Fluid balance and traumatic brain injury.”

2:45 pm – 3:00 pm: Jill Kolesar (PPS), Chris Richards (Chemistry), Bradley Berron (Chemical Engineering), Vincent Venditto (Pharmaceutical Sciences). “Targeted separation of patient derived cells for high throughput generation of exosome like vesicles for personalized medicine therapy.”

3:00 pm – 3:15 pm: Christal Badour (Psychology), Craig Rush (Behavioral Science). “Improving effectiveness of interventions for co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder.”

3:15 pm – 3:30 pm: Mairead Moloney (Sociology), Daniela Moga (PPS/Epi), Christal Badour (Psychology). “Evaluating online cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce stress, insomnia and sedative hypnotic use in Appalachian women aged 45+.”

3:30 pm – 3:45 pm Octavio Gonzalez (Dentistry), Oleg Tsodikov (Pharmaceutical Sciences), Sylvie Garneau-Tsodikova (Pharmaceutical Sciences). Development of inhibitors against Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) gingipains.”
